Domovoi Makes Aliyah is an illustrated children's book about what happens to the traditions a family carries with them when they emigrate. It was my final degree project: 32 spreads, drawn digitally.
Its character is Rusik, a domovoi: in Slavic folklore, the household spirit who lives in a house and belongs to it. A domovoi has to be fed. You leave him something at night and in return he keeps the place. He is built from what my research, “Visual, symbolic and ritual characteristics of Slavic mythological creatures: a comparison of Russian and Polish folklore,” established about the way the folklore actually describes him, down to the feeding. Rusik arrives in Israel with the family he has always lived with, and finds a country where nobody knows any of it.
Nobody drives him out and nobody refuses him. He is forgotten by degrees, and at the end of the book he falls asleep hungry. The argument sits inside him rather than being stated: traditions rarely disappear because somebody decides to give them up, they fade because the new country has its own holidays, its own daily life and its own way of doing ordinary things, so there is steadily less occasion for the old ones.
The colour tells the same story without a word of it. The book opens in the palette of the Russian flag, and red drains out of it as the story goes, until all that is left is the white and blue of the Israeli flag.
It is a children's book and it works as one. It also works for adults, and lands hardest on anyone who has made aliyah: a reader who has never emigrated feels the strangeness from inside the story instead of having it described, and a reader who has recognises the road.
My roleThe underlying research, the concept and narrative, the illustration and book design, and Rusik himself: the crocheted doll is my own pattern, designed and made by hand.
